Hats Off! to Cindy Brookshire whose short story "The Oyster House" took First Place in the Short Story Contest sponsored by Labrar Coffee in Goldsboro. Voters chose Brookshire's story from among a short list of five finalists. There was a 500-word maximum. Brookshire wins a $50 gift card and a Labrar Coffee t-shirt.

Hats Off! to Benjamin Cutler, the NCWN Regional Rep for Swain County in Western NC, who has been awarded the 2019 Susan Laughter Meyers Poetry Fellowship at the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities in Southern Pines. Each year, the merit-based fellowship is awarded by the North Carolina Poetry Society to one North or South Carolina poet. Cutler receives a weeklong writing residency at Weymouth and a $500 stipend.

Hats Off! to Maryedith Burrell whose feature documentary, RAISE HELL: The Life And Times of Molly Ivins, will premiere at The Grail Moviehouse in Asheville on September 20. The Opening Night screening will be followed by a Q&A. Ivins was an author/journalist/activist known for her political criticism and rapier wit. Distributed by Magnolia, the film will enjoy a regular run.
