Hats Off! to Miriam Herin whose novel A Stone for Bread (Livingston Press) was short-listed for the 2020 Eric Hoffer Award. The Eric Hoffer Book Award honors salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its inception, the Hoffer has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses. In A Stone for Bread, a disgraced poet accused of fabricating Nazi death camp poems breaks a thirty-four-year silence when he tells a young woman about his student year in Paris, his entanglement with a right-wing politician, his love affair with a Parisian shop girl, and his unnerving encounter with the enigmatic Frenchman who, he says, gave him the controversial poems.
